The Pace of our lives has increased so much that more often than not we seem to be running ourselves ragged just to stay in the same place. You are overwhelmed with the things that you have to do in a day. Work, eat, sleep, play, exercise, read, watch TV, Love, Be Loved, Listen to music and, the list goes on and on.

How can we fit everything into our crowded schedules? How can we accomplish our goals? You need to let go, unclutter your mind. However, this is easier said than done. In this scenario, meditation can help. Oriental, especially Indian philosophy has always emphasised on the beneficial effects of meditation in enabling a balanced life.

In its essential simplicity the outlines are as follows. First you must find some time and a place where you can be alone in silence. That means no TV or radio and no distractions. Start with breathing evenly, inhale and exhale consciously till you establish a rhythmic cadence. Then start relaxing different parts of your body. Focus your concentration on that part of the body that has the most tension and let go of that tension first. Continue with your even paced breathing till you have relaxed your entire body.

Notice how calm it has become. After this initial session, you will find that you have a renewed sense of energy and you will feel a calm confidence. One important thing that meditation accomplishes is to filter out the negativity that our stressed out life generates. We gather a lot of unwanted detritus that occupy our mental space and meditation works by filtering out these and allowing us to harbour beneficial, uplifting thoughts.

There are many schools of Yoga which include meditation as an essential part of the exercises. Whichever method one follows, it is preferable that one learns from a good teacher. Video tutorials are available which allow one to adopt the right poses. Please understand that these are not mere exercises but essentially a way of life and developed over thousands of years; if one approaches the discipline with the correct attitude then benefits are de rigueur. Even if one is flippant at the time of initiation it has been found that a diligent practitioner eventually derives the benefits.
