Funny graduation speeches may be just about the hardest thing you may attempt. Perhaps if you are a recognised funny person by profession you can take them in your stride. For the rest of us this may be the hardest thing you can do in terms of graduation speeches. You are up there on your own, you have just delivered your best funny line and no one laughs is a hard thing to face. A professional will know how to move on and bring the audience into their sense of humor and turn this into a good thing. However, the occasional speaker will find that a very hard thing to do. Perhaps there are a few things you can consider before you start doing funny graduation speeches. If you have definitely decided to make a funny speech then there may well be a few things you can think about before you finalise your material.
Clearly making funny graduation speeches is a bit riskier than doing a normal speech. However, you may feel that graduation needs livened up with some humor. You may also feel that there are some funny stories that you really want to tell. Indeed you may even be very confident about your funny material. You may even be a professional and be expected to deliver a funny speech. The risk is really quite basic, people do not laugh at your material. In that case a part of your graduation speech will have fallen flat and you will need to keep going despite this apparent set back. You can of course reduce the risk by keeping the humor to only a small part of the speech and saying it in such a low key way that even if no one laughs it would not be too noticeable. But, some people will go all out and make almost all of the speech based on humor and that takes a lot of hard work to get right.
The material that you have will clearly depend on the relationship you have to the audience. The student speaker will be close to most of the audience and will be more likely to understand what will make them laugh. At least they will know the favourite TV shows, funny movies and funny characters of the group. The guest speaker will have to work harder to be sure what will make the audience laugh as they are a little removed from the group. The professional funny person will clearly have a strong feel for what makes people laugh but they will still work hard to be sure they know how to work with this particular audience. The best thing is funny stories about the characters at the school which are genuinely funny and not offensive. That is easy for the student speaker but very hard for the guest speaker. They will need to try and bring in their own funny stories. The best way to make this work is to try it out, if you can, on a group of students. Hopefully they represent the group and can let you know if it is funny. Perhaps the idea of practicing with the graduation speech and testing out the humor is the best way to go.
Another good way to find out what works in funny graduation speeches is to look at videos of speeches which are rated as very funny. See what the material was about and try to gauge the delivery style. Perhaps you can take inspiration from them.
I hope your Funny Graduation Speeches
have genuinely funny material which is well delivered.
