Hybrids are finally becoming a conceivable option when it comes to cars.

Manufacturers are now investing in these models, so where they were once rare and a bit ugly, they're now becoming popular due to the winning combination of low emissions, low running costs and stylish looks.

Hybrids are powered by a combination of electricity and conventional internal combustion engines. A small petrol engine charges a high performance battery, which in turn powers an electric motor to set the car in motion. These cars are set to race towards the finishing line, with many helping you avoid current congestion charges in London, higher insurance premiums and higher tax brackets. Plus of course they run on very little petrol - what could be better in the current economic climate? Save money, and do your bit for saving the environment at the same time!

Here are the top 5 hybrids currently motoring around London:

Toyota Prius

This is probably the most famous hybrid car. Looking smooth and sleek from the outside, this little beauty works wonders in saving the pennies and cutting your carbon footprint. The car itself is spacious with plenty of boot room - although there's very little space for back-seat passengers. Averaging at 60 MPH, the Prius allows you to drive anywhere at a lower price. Driven correctly, this stylish car is known to be one of the most fuel-efficient and cleanest cars around.

Honda Civic

This is a stylish hybrid developed from one of the most reliable cars Honda have ever made, with built-in extras to suit the modern driver. Although it's not as powerful as other cars, the ride and handling have improved so it gets you from A to B with no hassle and little cost. This 4-door Civic is proclaimed to be a 'head-turner' on the outside with a simple and stylish interior to match, providing lots of room and supportive seats.

Toyota Yaris

This is an energetically styled and finely finished car with the option of adding a sporty package. Why wouldn't you want to be seen driving it? Although a little small, the hybrid Yaris is spacious and comfy enough for all its passengers. You can drive into the future in this reliable car, which handles everyday trips with ease - you won't regret it, and neither will your wallet!

Honda Insight

This beauty costs a lot less than the Toyota Prius and looks a lot more stylish too. The only down-side is that it's not as economically cheap to run. It depends on what your main goal is when buying a hybrid - to save money or save the environment?

Ford Fusion

And finally, the sophisticated and stylish Ford that's economic and spacious enough for five. You can hit 47 MPH before the petrol usage even starts! That makes it ideal for city driving at a very low price.
