Your career, like any other important undertakings should be handled like a high priority project. Just like a project, you should have definite goals and milestones. That way you’ll be more apt to hold yourself accountable to your objectives and maintain your timelines. And, you’ll know that you are headed in the right direction when it is time to make a change. Putting together a career plan that sets you on your own personal career path is a valuable tool. Not only will it help you make professional decisions, it will also aid you in measuring your success.
To get to your ultimate career, you’re going to have to map out a plan. Your plan will take you down several different paths, each one allowing you to advance a bit more. Taking yourself down different paths requires some thought and planning.
For instance, you’re an Accountant right now. You’ve been doing the same work for about ten years and you’ve decided it is time for a change. You could go back to school to get your MBA and head toward the corporate world again. That’s a possibility, but something is getting in the way of that decision. You’re not really sure what it is but you’re thinking that if you go down this road again, that you will not be happy in three or four years.
You’ll have to do some personal assessing to really discover what is getting in the way of your MBA idea. Ask yourself if you are happy in your job. Consider all aspects of the role you’re in currently and decide what you love about it. Then, ask yourself if you could remove parts of the job, what would they be?
The important part of this exercise is to determine what is holding you back from your career advancement – if it is that you are bored to death by accounting, you will want to reconsider your career path. If you determine that you want to become an artist, you’re going to have to reconsider your career path. You really want to drill down to find out exactly what your goals are and what steps that you will need to take in order to meet those goals. You’ll definitely have a clearer sense of when and why you veered off course and what you need to do to get back on the right path.
Getting on the right career path will allow you to map out where you want to be in your career in 2 years, 5 years, or even 20. If you have had the good fortune of finding something that you truly enjoy doing, you need to think long term and decide how you could grow and excel in that particular field.
What is key here is that work does not have to be hard. You’re there at least a third of your day – why can’t it be something you truly enjoy? Put yourself on a career path that leads you toward personal fulfillment.
