Even those who live in St.-Petersburg sometimes dont know how to spend their week-end. Saint-Petersburg is so rich in architectural monuments, museums and beautiful spots that it is really difficult to visit them all. Where are you advised to go in the first place? What to do if you want simply to enjoy the city sights? If you are a tourist, all these questions might be really urgent, especially if you have your own sightseeing programme. We will try to give a brief overview of St.-Petersburg attractions. This is an example of a 7-day visit to St.-Petersburg. The list is far from comprehensive (for instance, there were no Piskarevskoye memorial cemetery and aquaparks included in it). Still, we hope you find it useful.
So, Part 1.
What are the first things St.-Petersburg is associated with? There is no doubt that those are the State Hermitage Museum and the Winter Palace (which accommodates a part of the Hermitage collection) . That is where you should go first. The number of exhibits is great you will have to overpass about 20 kilometers to see them all. Of course, hardly anyone would do such a thing. But anyway, a visit to the Hermitage is a must.
The Hermitage stands on the Palace Square, and we advise you to arrive here in the morning, when the museum has just opened. A great number of tourists are eager to get inside, so you might have to queue for long. The Hermitage works Tuesday Saturday 10:30 18.00, Sunday 10:30 17:00 and is closed on Mondays. Tickets cost 350 roubles.
Since a visit to the Winter Palace will probably finish by dinner, you will definitely want to have a snack at some caf© or restaurant. Those who can afford a costly dinner will easy find a restaurant to spend their time at. The Winter Palace itself offers 10 halls of the Hermitage Restaurant. There are also lots of cosy restaurants on the nearby Nevsky prospect and the Millionaire Street (or Millionnnaja Oelitsa). One of the oldest and the best known of them is the Literary Caf© (Nevsky pr., 18), associated with a renowned Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. If you are looking for something cheaper, we advise you to go farther to the spot where the Nevsky prospect intersects with Bolshaya Morskaya Street. This street is occupied with McDonalds, Barracuda Bistro and cafes of the kind. Another, cheapest variant is to buy food in a grocery store. One of them is found at the corner of Bolshaya Konyushennaya Street and Shvedsky Pereulok. There is also a small caf© on the Nevsky prospect, not far from the Palace Square.
Looking for souvenirs? There is one big souvenir store located by the arch of the General Staff building (this building is opposite the Hermitage). The choice of souvenirs and presents is good.
The second part of your sightseeing tour around the city can be started with observation of attractions close to the Palace Square. At the square itself tourists might want to take a picture of the Winter Palace and the General Staff building or the Alexander Column. There is a quay by the Palace bridge, with two lions standing by the quay. This spot is also popular with the city guests. Cross the Palace Bridge, and you will get to the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island. If you wanted to have rest, Birjevaya square (Stock Exchange Square) on Vasilyevsky Island is just the right place. Its attractions are the Rostral Columns and the Stock Exchange building. Every three hours there is a musical fountain performing on the Neva River. This is one of the most popular city attractions.
Furthermore you can stroll along the University Embankment, look into the Kunstkamera (Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography) and observe the renowned Sphinxes. And if you make up your mind to take a night walk around the city, dont forget that bridges are drawn at 00:30 pm.
