How DVD Backup Saved My Moms Career
Two years ago my mom was working for a major IT company whose name shall not be disclosed in this article for safety reasons of those involved in the story, which nevertheless doesnt make this story any less interesting or educating.

My Mom was a server administrator whose responsibility was to take care of the company servers and the data stored on them. She always used to tell me: If you deal with important data on an every day basis, there is no such thing as too much security. Whatever safety measures can be taken must be taken, and even when everything possible has been done, it is a job of the server administrator to do the impossible, and this is what they get paid for.

I never quite understood what she meant by doing the impossible until one day when she came home with the expression of deep concern on her face. Mom, what happened? I asked her softly. Oh, dear! Dont ask, just a little trouble at work, nothing important. But I insisted upon an explanation and eventually she burst out: Weve had a terrible accident major fire! It has all burnt down! All hard drives and backup copies, and tapes and all of it. Its all gone now, every single piece of information. I dont know what I am going to do. It is now my duty to restore the data, but all backups are lost. Millions of dollars are lost! They are going to fire me for sure!

I was completely shattered to hear that news, but I always try to cheer my Mom up, when she is in a bad mood, or something bad happens, because I like her so much and hate to see her grieving, so I asked: Are you personally liable for the damages? Not really, but its going to ruin my career. Ten years of work and good reputation, no one is going to hire me after that.

Somehow I remembered her words about doing the impossible and just when I began to think of it, it occurred to me! Wait a minute! Do you remember how you brought that pile of DVDs from work about two months ago and said: These are extra security measures, and told me to lock them is the safe What was on those DVDs? Mom said, You are a genius! How could I forget? Those DVDs contain the most important financial documents of our corporation including all transactions and contracts. Of course, as an employee I was not allowed to take them home, but now it doesnt matter, I was not going to share them with anyone anyway. Bring me that box right this minute and well see if those DVDs are fine.

I brought her the box and we checked every DVD from that box one by one. Luckily they were all just as good as we hoped. I cant describe how happy my mom was. She now knew she wouldnt have to be fired, or humiliated. After that we had a meal of celebration and felt so relieved the entire evening.
